Stamenic never made a competitive appearance for Forest, having joined from Serbian side Red Star Belgrade in the summer of 2024. He spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Olympiacos, where he helped the Greek club win both the league and cup titles.

Speaking after the deal was confirmed, Stamenic expressed his enthusiasm about the move to Wales. He said the club’s project and ambitions convinced him to commit early. “I’ve been told about the plans and I fell in love with it from the first meeting,” he stated. “I am just over the moon that the deal is done.”

The midfielder was in the stands at the Swansea.com Stadium last weekend as Swansea defeated Sheffield United 1-0. He could be in contention to make his debut when Alan Sheehan’s side host Watford on Saturday.

Head coach Alan Sheehan praised the signing, noting Stamenic’s physical presence and technical versatility. “He brings different attributes to our midfield with his physicality and athleticism,” Sheehan said. “Marko’s desire to be part of what we’re building stood out right away.”

Stamenic’s Arrival Adds Depth and Experience to Swansea’s Midfield Plans

Marko Stamenic’s signing marks Swansea’s ninth addition of the summer transfer window as the club continues a major squad rebuild. The move is seen as a strategic investment in a player who brings both domestic and international pedigree. Stamenic has earned 31 caps for New Zealand, scoring three goals for his country.

Before joining Nottingham Forest, Stamenic had already built a solid reputation in Europe. He began his career in New Zealand with Western Suburbs and Team Wellington before moving to Danish club FC Copenhagen. After a loan spell at HB Køge, he transferred to Red Star Belgrade in 2023, where he won another domestic double.

Last season, he enjoyed further success at Olympiacos, adding a third domestic double to his growing list of achievements. Swansea’s director of football, Richard Montague, emphasized how the midfielder’s arrival boosts the club’s energy and tactical adaptability. “His arrival strengthens an already robust midfield unit,” said Montague. “He’ll help us play with relentless energy and adaptability.”

Despite the signing, Swansea are expected to remain active in the transfer market ahead of the September 1 deadline. A centre-forward remains a top priority, while the club also seeks a left-sided defender and a wide player.

Stamenic’s experience across several European leagues, coupled with his international credentials, gives Swansea both immediate impact and long-term potential. If he integrates quickly into Sheehan’s high-tempo system, the New Zealander could become a key figure in the club’s push for promotion.
