Luongo, 32, joins the Lions on a one-year deal after impressing during a trial period. The defensive midfielder arrives with 45 caps and six goals for Australia. He played a key role in Ipswich Town’s promotion to the Premier League and made 12 top-flight appearances last season. Known for his composure and work rate, Luongo brings valuable experience to Millwall’s midfield.
Steven Benda, 26, arrives on a season-long loan from Premier League side Fulham. The German shot-stopper adds competition in goal following the arrival of Max Crocombe earlier this summer. Benda previously featured for Swansea City and is known for his strong distribution and reflexes.
Director of Football Steve Gallen spoke highly of Luongo’s leadership and character. “He is a player I know well from his QPR days,” said Gallen. “He brings a wealth of experience to our midfield and has already made a positive impact around the training ground.”
A Career of Consistency: Luongo’s Journey Back to London
Luongo began his career in England at Tottenham Hotspur but did not make a senior appearance for the club. He gained experience during loan spells with Ipswich Town and Swindon Town. In 2013, he joined Swindon permanently and made 100 appearances, scoring 14 goals.
Later that year, Luongo moved to Queens Park Rangers where he became a regular figure, playing 152 games and netting 10 goals. His career continued with stints at Sheffield Wednesday and Middlesbrough. He rejoined Ipswich permanently in January 2023 and was instrumental in their return to the Premier League.
Millwall’s summer transfer activity reflects a clear strategy under Neil, blending youth and experience. The club previously signed Zak Sturge from Chelsea and secured a club-record deal for striker Josh Coburn from Middlesbrough.
